New York City Parks to get free WIFI

Cablevision and Time Warner Cable have agreed to spend $10 million to provide free WIFI service in 32 city parks. This is part of the deal to renew their exclusive cable television franchises.

Under the deal, anyone can have free WiFi in the parks for up to three 10-minute sessions a month – a total of 30 minutes per person. After that, the cable companies will charge you 99 cents a day to surf the Internet.

Time Warner also agreed to set up 40 community broadband access centers in local neighborhoods, while Cablevision agreed to work with the Department of Education to establish media centers in certain public schools.

This sounds like a terrible deal, after all in the last year Time Warner and Cablevision raked in more than $2 billion just in city cable-television revenues. I think its going to be more of an annoyance than anything else. Who wants to hop on and hop off after just 10 minutes of use?
