Split PageRank and inconsistent linking could be hurting your rankings. Part 1

Split pagerank and inconsistent linking could be hurting your website rankings. You can test to see if you have split pagerank by visiting your site with and without the www. if the pagerank in the google toolbar is different for each, then you just confirmed that you have split pagerank. This is caused when have incoming links to both http://seo-rant.com and http://www.oralseymour.com. This can be corrected in a couple of ways. In the title tag you can

between the tags of the pages on your site, of course you change seo-rant.com to your domain. This tells the search engine to follow every link on site beginning with the http://www base. Over time the non www version of pages that are indexed will be replaced with the www version. This can be used on Apache and Windows hosts and works best when you have static htm or html pages. I do not recommend you use it if you are running OSCommerce, Zencart or any other PHP based Content Management System. Use the next option.

The next option is to use the .htacess file which is usually found in the root domain of your website. Add the following code to the .htacess file - of course replace seo-rant with your domain.

RewriteEngine on RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^seo-rant\.com [NC] RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://www.seo-rant.com/$1 [L,R=301]

This tool redirects users and search engine robots to the www version of your website. This method works on apache servers and it should be used with extreme care. Improper configuration of the .htacess file can make your whole website unreachable.

The final option is to use Google's Webmaster Sitemaps. There is an option that allows you to choose which version of the website google indexes. Although there is a note there that says Google doesn’t guarantee the URL you prefer will show in the search results.

UPDATE: June 2008

You can now go change your preffered method in Google's Webmaster Tools. www or the non www version of your site.
