PS3 Updates are getting ridiculous

Tagged Under : ,

I must say that the updates on the PlayStation 3 are getting ridiculous. I tried to play an online game today and I had to go through the process of updating my system software.

System Software Version 3.10. You know the new features it added?

The display method for photos in the [Photo] category has been changed. Photos are now displayed in a matrix instead of a vertical display so that you can see more photos at one time.

So I had to quit my game and go through the inconvenience just to change the way photos are displayed?

Just about a week ago Apple released Itunes 8.2.1 which broke the Pre’s Itunes syncing capability.

Apple’s Subtle warning to the Palm Pre about Itunes syncing.

One of the Palm Pre’s selling points is its ability to sync with your current Itunes library. On Tuesday, Apple published a support article iTunes: About unsupported third-party digital media players.itunes7

Read the excerpt below

Apple designs the hardware and software to provide seamless integration of the iPhone and iPod with iTunes, the iTunes Store, and tens of thousands of apps on the App Store. Apple is aware that some third-parties claim that their digital media players are able to sync with Apple software. However, Apple does not provide support for, or test for compatibility with, non-Apple digital media players and, because software changes over time, newer versions of Apple’s iTunes software may no longer provide syncing functionality with non-Apple digital media players.

While they don’t mention Palm by name, It’s pretty clear who they are talking about. The thing is, their has always been devices that are able to copy songs from Itunes but the Palm Pre goes the extra step of identifying itself as an iPod. This of course has something to do with the fact that the Pre has a lot of former Apple engineers working on the device.

Palm’s response is

“Palm’s media sync works with the current version of iTunes,” Palm spokesperson Lynn Fox told Digital Daily’s John Paczkowski. “If Apple chooses to disable media sync in a future version of iTunes, it will be a direct blow to their users who will be deprived of a seamless synchronization experience. However, people will have options. They can stay with the iTunes version that works to sync their music on their Pre, they can transfer the music via USB, and there are other third-party applications we could consider.”

I am very surprised that Apple did not file a lawsuit like they have been threatening for months now.

Digital TV transition bill fails to pass in the House of Representatives

The United States House of Representatives did not pass a bill to delay the Digital TV Transition. It looked like a sure bet to pass. The bill needed two-thirds of the votes of the House under “special rules adopted for the vote,” and reportedly, the vote was just 258 to 168 in favor of changing the date. As it stands, an estimated 6.5 million Americans are not yet prepared for the switch which is now back on track for February 17th. And the government program that issues coupons for the converters has run out of money. I’m not sure delaying it is going to make much of a difference. This has been publicized so much through ads on TV, Radio and the internet. And remember the stations and groups that put time and money into preparing for the switch

Circuit City’s going out of business sale

Yesterday I visited a Circuit City store in the Green Acres mall in Valley Stream, NY. I saw the big signs that said 10 to 30% off. I was disappointing when I went into the store, televisions, receivers and most other big ticket items were only 10% off, the 30% was on cables and accessories. And on top of that, the discount was on the MSRP, prices where cheaper at Costco, Best Buy and some reputable internet dealer such as Onecall and Crutchfield.

I never really liked Circuit City. I thought the stores were kind of dingy and the layouts were a mess. Best Buy stores just seemed to be brighter. Maybe it is better lighting or the fact that the Best Buy colors are brighter.
